PRESS RELEASE

Joeten-Kiyu Public Library’s Launches Community Cultural Class!

On Saturday, July 11, 2020, Joeten-Kiyu Public Library launched a FREE Community Cultural Class to more than 13 children and their parents. As part of the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library’s 2020 Summer Reading Program, children had fun learning the basics on how to use the talaya with hands-on instruction sponsored by the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library and Friends of the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library. Classes were taught by licensed talayeros Donovin Lizama and Peyten Lizama.

Library Director Erlinda C. Naputi expressed her appreciation as Team JKPL welcomed 13 families who attended Saturday’s class. She further stressed the importance of learning about our local culture and utilizing this opportunity to learn new skills.

For talayero Donovin Lizama, “Talaya has been an important part of my life since I was a kid, passed down from my grandfather to my father and to me. I have always enjoyed the connection we make with the ocean when we are able to feed our families from what we have caught. Especially during these pandemic times, I feel learning about the
talaya and sharing this knowledge with our community is even more valuable.”

“I love the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library, and I have so much fun!” stated Avalyn Mae Lizama of her experience at Saturday’s class. Also present was Eusebio Borja who brought along a unique visitor–a deer a.k.a. Juan Binadu– to the JKPL’s Community Cultural Class. Biba, Joeten-Kiyu Public Library!
