Joeten-Kiyu Public Library Hosts Successful Internet Camp for the Summer

The Joeten-Kiyu Public Library (JKPL) hosted a successful Summer Internet Camp for children ages 9 to 12 years old. JKPL’s Internet Camp was held at the Information Technology Center from July 9th -18th, 2024 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with two divided sessions. Internet Camp provided children with an opportunity to learn about internet safety, malware types, and netiquette. The Internet Camp was designed to teach children about the basics of the internet while having fun playing games and competing with fellow internet campers.

Day 1 focused on recognizing different malware attacks such as virus, spyware, rootkit, ransomware, trojans, and worms. After being able to distinguish each type of attack, maintenance steps were shown on how to stay safe when browsing the internet.

Day 2 was focused on recognizing the difference between what was safe and unsafe online.  Children were given tips on what online names they should use to prevent any personal information from being given online.  For safety, children were shown that not everyone they meet online are who they say they are and should never meet in person.

Day 3 was on netiquette, basically a combination of the words internet and etiquette.  Netiquette are best practices that can be done to respect others’ preference, send the right message, and prevent cyberbullying.  Cyberbullying is a growing concern today and has caused countless harm to teens and children most especially playing games online.

The JKPL Internet Camp has received multiple positive feedbacks from parents, saying that their children would immediately want to implement the safety measures they’ve learned to their accounts as soon as they get home.

Internet Camp covered other topics, including:

    • Coding
    • Online research
    • Gaming
    • Online Card Catalog
    • Ebooks

Internet Camp was taught by Computer Programmer Joey Songsong.  “We are thrilled with the success of this summer’s internet camp,” said Computer Programmer /ITC Supervisor Joey Songsong. “The children had a great time learning about the internet and how to use it safely and responsibly.”

“I had a lot of fun at internet camp,” said 7-year-old camper Ava Lyn N. Lizama. “I learned how to stay safe online and how to use the internet to do my homework.”
